Citizen scientists asked to ‘Report a Robin’ in the Abel Tasman National Park this summer
Project Janszoon is asking Abel Tasman visitors and locals to report sightings of the bush robin (kakaruai or toutouwai) in the national park, especially along the coastal track, from 6 to 21 January 2025.
Robins, which have been largely absent from the area for the last 30 years, seem to be making a comeback thanks to habitat restoration and predator control. The information collected by citizen scientists will be used alongside data collected by scientific bird call monitoring, which has also showed robins to be spreading their wings into new areas of the park.
