We saw Weka regularly on the whole track from Whariwharangi to Marahau (we didn't see any in thw hills between Anchorage and Marahau).
Three times we encountered Weka chicks:
1. At the beginning of Onetahuti Bay, where the boardwalk is wider and offers a view of the ocean, we saw a weka with three chicks.
2. At Tonga Quarry, near the huge concrete block, we saw one Weka chick.
3. Just after leaving Anchorage bay we saw a Weka with 2 - 3 chicks (they were gone too fast)
The picture is from the first sighting.
Somewhere around apple bay i think it was. We cane across a weka which we thought was carrying its chick up the steep slope. We watched it for about a minute and it ledt it and jumped up the last bit onto the track. I stepped down to pick up the chick when i realised it was a dead baby penguin that eas freshky killed as it was still warm. I put it on the track and the weka came back to try and eat it giving me an opoortunity to record it for a while. I have no way of uploading the video for ye.
